INTRODUCTION

Project Monitoring and Evaluation is the continuous day-to-day assessment of project implementation in relation to agreed schedules, and of the use of inputs, infrastructure, and services by project beneficiaries.

  • It Provides managers and other stakeholders with continuous feedback on implementation.
  • Identifies actual or potential successes and problems as early as possible to facilitate timely adjustments to project operation.
  • It is performed while a project is being implemented, with the aim of improving the project design & functioning while in action.

Monitoring information is collected at specific times - daily, monthly or quarterly. At some point this information needs to be collected, brought together and analyzed so that it can answer questions such as: How well are we doing? Are we doing the right things? What difference are we making? Does the approach need to be modified, and if so how?

 Project Evaluation is the periodic assessment of a project's relevance, performance, efficiency, & impact (both expected and unexpected) in relation to stated objectives: Studies the outcome of a project i.e. changes in income, housing quality, benefits distribution, cost-effectiveness, etc. with the aim of informing the design of future projects.

 This course familiarizes participants with various project monitoring and evaluation systems and tools that focus on results in international development. The course offers participants both a conceptual framework and practical skill development. 

FOR WHOM IS THE TRAINING RELEVANT

Project officers, managers and professional evaluators/consultants charged with the responsibility of monitoring and evaluation of projects. Those responsible for project-level Monitoring and Evaluation, Senior managers, Project leaders, researchers in programs working in sectors such as agriculture; climate change and environment; disaster management; education; food and nutrition; health;  humanitarian relief; logistics and telecommunication; recovery and reconstruction; safety and security; water sanitation and hygiene.

REQUIREMENTS

The training is designed for participants who are reasonably proficient in English and have an understanding of basic Statistics and M&E.

CLASS SIZE

The class size is limited to 10 participants to ensure that each participants has the opportunity to interact with the facilitator. The training may be cancelled if there are less than five participants.

TRAINING OBJECTIVE

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Acquire knowledge and competence to apply project planning and management and monitoring and evaluation techniques
  • An understanding of the issues surrounding project interventions and techniques
  • Knowledge and ability to make sound and innovative judgment in project planning and management
  • Become familiar with the project development cycle.
  • An understanding of the key concepts of monitoring and evaluation
  • Knowledge of different methodologies and tools for monitoring and evaluation
  • Ability to design and formulate tools for monitoring and evaluating programs and projects
  • Communicating research findings to different stakeholders

TRAINING CONTENT

Module 1: Project cycle and project planning

Defining project scope

  • Understanding the difficulties inherent in project management
  • Defining project parameters
  • Setting project milestones and breaking those into tasks

Organizing the project’s human resources

  • Identifying who is needed for the project
  • Enumerating what is at stake for participants to leverage shared points of interest
  • Negotiating for and scheduling the necessary resources

Monitoring the project’s progress

  • Demonstrating leadership and communicating effectively to motivate those involved
  • Tracking the project’s progress and identifying departures from initial goals
  • Promoting the cooperation of project participants

Module 2: Tools , Methods and Approaches facilitating Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Monitoring, control and evaluation: An overview
  • Introduction to the key concepts of Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Building monitoring and evaluation teams with defined roles and strong capabilities
  • Baseline surveys
  • Performance Indicators; Quantitative and qualitative Indicators
  • The logical framework as the Basic tool for the Design of Monitoring and Evaluation systems
  • Tools for  Data collection, processing, analysis and presentation techniques
  • Project Implementation
  • Types of Evaluation
  • Designing simple monitoring and evaluation systems for projects

 

Module 3: Learning and Improvements

  • Monitoring of physical and financial progress
  • Writing Monitoring and Evaluation reports
  • Dissemination of Monitoring and Evaluation results
  • Project Management software e.g Microsoft project

METHODOLOGY

The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.

All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. The participants should be reasonably proficient in English.

ACCREDITATION

Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with an Indepth Research Services (IRES) certificate.

TRAINING VENUE

The training is residential and will be held at The Sportsview Hotel, Kasarani. Applicants are highly encouraged to stay at the hotel where the training is held. The course fee covers the course tuition, training materials, two break refreshments, lunch, and study visits.

All participants will additionally cater for their, travel expenses, visa application, insurance, and other personal expenses.
