Description
INTRODUCTION
Quantitative data analysis is the process of presenting and interpreting numerical data. It often contains descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics include measures of central tendency and measures of variability about the average and give the a picture of the data collected and used in a research while inferential statistics are the outcomes of statistical tests, helping deductions to be made from the data collected, to test hypotheses set and relating findings to the sample or population..
SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) is a computer application that provides statistical analysis mainly for quantitative data. It allows for in-depth access and preparation, analytical reporting, graphics
and modelling of data for decison making. Currently, it is widely used by Governments, businesses, law enforcement agencies, health care providers, academics and also in experimental and observational studies.
SPSS is a simple package to use. The user interface of the package is a spreadsheet, there are cells, columns and rows. The columns represent the variables and the rows, cases. Cases and
variables are the two main components in statistics and cases are the subject of analysis
This course deals with the practice of processing and analysis of quantitative data using SPSS. The training combines theoretical foundations with methodological perspectives and hands-on technical exercises, aiming at training participants in the concrete uses of quantitative data analysis in social science research using SPSS.
The training also explores the quantitative data gathering tools with particular focus on emerging tools for rapid data gathering such as mobile data gathering, SMS Surveys, Online surveys, and demonstrates how data obtained from these sources can be integrated and analysed in SPSS.
Participants are guided through practical exercises on the use of CSPro a software tool used for entering, editing, tabulating, mapping, and disseminating census and survey data & ODK an application for gathering data using Adroid mobile handsets and devices
FOR WHOM IS THE TRAINING RELEVANT
Researchers, Data Analysts,Statisticians, Policy Analyst, Data Managers, Economists, Community Development Practitioners, Health Workers, Nutritionist, Monitoring and Evaluation Practioners, Food Security and Livelihood practioners,Research Student, Program Managers and executives who use or intend to use SPSS as a tool to analyse the data they collect in their organisations
REQUIREMENTS
The training is designed for participants who are reasonably proficient in English and in computing. This is an intermediate course and It is prefered that participants have some basic knowledge working with SPSS, but not a compulsory requirement. Participants should also have basic statistics knowledge.
CLASS SIZE
The class size is limited to 10 participants to ensure that each participants has the opportunity to interact with the facilitator. The training may be cancelled if there are less than five participants.
