ArcGIS for Desktop Level 2-Advanced course

Introduction

A GIS (Geographic Information System) is a powerful tool used for computerized mapping and spatial analysis. A GIS provides functionality to capture, store, query, analyze, display and output geographic information.

ArcGIS tools used to visualize real-world features, discover patterns, and communicate information. Using ArcMap and ArcGIS Online, the participants will work with GIS maps, explore data, and analyze maps and data as you learn fundamental concepts that underlie GIS technology. Participant(s) will gain the required skills for in order, to solve spatial problems through spatial analysis and maps for informed decision making using ArcGIS.

Course objectives

The participant(s) is expected to gain skills and understanding on how to perform the following by the end of the course:

  • Create and manage geodatabase
  • Automate tasks and spatial analysis
  • Create and utilize advanced ATLAS/advanced pages
  • Carry out spatial, grid and surface analysis
  • Carry out classification and reclassification of Rasters.

Requirements

Basics in computing science and/or training ArcGIS for Desktop Level 1

Software

  • ESRI ArcGIS trial

Duration: 5days

TRAINING CONTENT

Module I: Raster data management

  • Raster Georeferencing
  • Ground control points (GCP)
  • The new raster tool bar “image analysis” of ArcGIS for Desktop

 

Module II: Advanced Geodatabase

  • Review of the different types of geodatabase (file, personal, multi-users)
  • Notion of spatial reference
  • Structure your geodatabase
  • Create and manage a file or personal geodatabase
  • Domains and subtypes in a geodatabase (automation / combination)
  • Import / export structure of a geodatabase
  • Raster data storage within a geodatabase

Module III: Spatial queries and diagrams and advanced layout

  • Spatial queries
  • Diagrams
  • Insert diagrams and attribute tables in your layout

Advanced layout

  • Advanced ATLAS / dynamic pages

Module IV: The Model Builder, Spatial Analyst functions and Grid analysis

  • Automation of tasks and spatial analysis

Spatial Analyst functions

  • Spatial analysis for vector and raster datasets
  • Terrain analysis
  • Surface analysis
  • Raster mathematics
  • GRID raster format

Grid analysis

  • Add a GRID to your map
  • Query a GRID
  • Setup an automatic GIS layer from a selection (raster calculator)
  • Histogram
  • Cell identification
  • GRID classification

Module V: Surface analysis, Distance calculation, combination of data values

  • Create a slope dataset
  • Create a grid of altitude isolines
  • Create a shaded relief map
  • Boost microreliefs
  • Create a sun exposition raster dataset and set a sunny area based on an
    azimuth
  • Calculate zonal statistics of the land occupation from the sun exposition

Distance calculation, combination of data values

  • GRID reclassification
  • Combination and ponderation of data values
  • Cost distance

 

METHODOLOGY

The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.

All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. The participants should be reasonably proficient in English.

ACCREDITATION

Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with an Indepth Research Services (IRES) certificate.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Payment for all courses includes a registration fee, which is non-refundable, and equals 15% of the total sum of the course fee.

1.    Participants may cancel attendance 14 days or more prior to the training commencement date.

2.    No refunds will be made 14 days or less to the training commencement date. However, participants who are unable to attend may opt to attend a similar training at a later date, or send a substitute participant provided the participation criteria have been met.
